What Type Of Cockroaches You Could Find In Your Home

CockroachesDid you know that there are more than 4,500 types of cockroaches in this world? On the bright side, just under 70 species are found in the US. Out of those, you really only need to worry about five species that may invade your home, according to the Terminix Pest Control experts:

German Cockroach

The German Cockroach is the most common roach found in America. This type of roach breeds really fast and actually it reproduces faster than any other residential cockroach. As a matter of fact, it only takes one female to invade your home. The German Cockroach is light brown and can grow up to over half an inch and is omnivorous. If you take a closer look, you will also be able to see two dark parallel strips from the head to its wings. This type of roach prefers spaces near water (bathrooms and kitchens) and where it has access to food.

Brown-Banded Cockroaches

Brown-Banded Cockroaches are a little bit smaller than German Cockroaches measuring about 10 to 14 mm long. Male roaches are dark-brown at the base and golden-tan toward wing tips, while the females have reddish-brown wings and dark-brown bodies. These type of roaches prefer drier and warmer areas which means they tend to stay away form bathrooms and kitchens.  The Male Brown-Banded Cockroach can somewhat fly, but are more likely to jump.

American Cockroaches

American Cockroaches can grow up to three inches and they are the largest species of common cockroach. They are of brown or reddish color. You will find this type of roach usually outside, however, they like warm and damp areas such as kitchen sinks and laundry rooms. Both male and female American Cockroaches can fly. They are more commonly also known as Palmetto Bugs.

Smoky Brown Cockroaches

The Smoky Brown Cockroach is predominantly found in the southeastern U.S.. It is a little bit smaller than the American Cockroach. They grow to about one and a half inches. They are rather dark mahogany in color. These type of roaches prefer moist and damp environments such as cutters and crawl spaces. Experts say they dehydrate rather quickly.  Both male and females can fly which make them and all other flying roaches most feared pests, at least in Louisiana.

Oriental Cockroaches

Oriental Cockroaches are often called Water Bugs because they like damp and moist environments. They also like dark areas which means it will be more difficult for you to find them. They tend to settle in sewers and damp basements. They are about 1.25 inches in length and are dark brown and have glossy black wings. Oriental roaches can not fly.
