Destroying Ant Hills

What Are Fire Ants?

Destroying-Fire-AntsThere are more than 12,000 different species of ants, but one of the most widely known species is the Fire Ant. These ants are reddish brown in color and roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch in length. Fire ants are excellent predators and help control such pests as fleas and ticks in lawns, but also can be a nuisance to humans when they move into the neighborhood.

Where Do Fire Ants Live?

Fire ants are not too picky when it comes to soil type for their homes, but they prefer sunny areas like lawns but can also be found in stumps, trees and even under buildings. A fire ant colony will create a huge tunnel system into the ground and typically will have a large hill that can be 18 to 24 inches in height. The ant hill is made up of piles of the sand and soil that the ants removed as they dug their tunnels. But, contrary to popular view, these ant hills really do not house the ants and only serve as an entrance and exit. These ant hills are one of the reasons why Destroying Ant Hills can be so difficult.

Why is destroying Ant Hills So Difficult?

As you have probably guessed from personal experience, kicking or knocking over an ant mound will not get rid of the colony. It will certainly rile them up to protect their home and also to start rebuilding it, but it will not destroy them. To destroy an ant colony, you need to kill the queen or in some circumstances more than one queen. But, the queen is difficult to find and is well protected in her network of tunnels deep in the ground.
